San Francisco drinks like an Italian neighborhood that learned to love last light. The local pour is a bitter cocktail at five, then something from the sea. Both halves have a street: aperitivo leans Valencia and Chestnut, raw fish leans Steiner — and the Marina rooms on Chestnut pour both.

Aperitivo is the local language

The Mission does the classic version. Beretta on Valencia Street posts Ora di Aperitivo Monday–Friday 5–6 PM, with printed drinks at sbagliato $8, negroni $8, house white $8, house red $8, and printed plates at $10 including fava bean bruschetta, pizzetta margherita, and spaghetti con polpetti. Note the 5% surcharge for employee benefits, at 1199 Valencia Street. Up in the Marina, Delarosa stretches the same idea across the afternoon: happy hour Monday–Friday 2–6 PM at 2175 Chestnut Street, with food at $10 and drinks including $8 spritzes, $10 espresso martini, $8 house wine, and $6 Delarosa house Kölsch. North Beach wrote the recipe

This city earned its Italian pour. North Beach holds a long-standing Italian-American community that, for generations, has filled the neighborhood with restaurants and cafes, per San Francisco Travel — and the Mission and Marina rooms above are its happy-hour heirs. Short windows, printed prices, no ceremony: one hour, one bitter drink, one $10 plate.

The Marina's seafood hour

Chestnut and Steiner handle the second half. Ace Wasabi posts 5–6 PM daily at 3339 Steiner St, with house cold sake $7 and mixed sashimi 8 pieces $13 (from $26) plus $8 rolls on the printed menu. Around the corner, Pacific Catch posts Aloha Hour Monday–Friday 3:00–6:00 PM and Saturday–Sunday 3:00–5:00 PM at 2027 Chestnut Street, with cocktails at $9 and a Friday Aloha-shirt Mai Tai at $6 for the first drink. Share plates and poke are named on that menu without dollar amounts, so order the priced pours and ask about the rest.

How to drink it like a local

  • Afternoon: spritzes and $10 plates in the Marina (Delarosa) inside the Monday–Friday 2–6 PM window.
  • Five o'clock: one bitter hour on Valencia (Beretta) — sbagliato $8 or negroni $8, Monday–Friday 5–6 PM.
  • Golden hour: sake and sashimi (Ace Wasabi, daily 5–6 PM) or a $9 Aloha Hour cocktail (Pacific Catch).
